Why invest in a height adjustable couch?

The benefits of height adjustable couches are vast, both to patients and the clinicians and therapists that use them. In this article, we highlight some of the key advantages of a variable height couch over a fixed height couch.

There are a number of studies and publications on improving care for people with mobility disabilities, many of which involve the use of height-adjustable or variable height examination tables.

In 2017, a US study from G. Fragala, M. Labreche and P. Wawzynieki concluded that:

"Height adjustable examination tables provide bnefits to patients and should be considered when seeking furnishings for ambulatory care clinics."

The study also featured some interesting statistics, such as a 72% reduction in the patient's exertion, 64% reduction in difficulty getting onto the couch/table, and 42% increase in feeling safe. The reported results indicated that, when a height-adjustable examination table is provided to assist a patient who requires assistance mounting the table, the process of getting up on to the  table is made much easier and requires less exertion.

In a separate 2016 study, also from G. Fragala, the results indicated that the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorder for caregivers can be significantly reduced, by using height-adjustable examination tables. The conclusions also included the following statement:

"Caregivers reported that significantly lower perceived physical exertion was required to perform the task with a height-adjustable examination table... This reduction in perceived physical exertion may translate to less force exerted on the musculoskeletal structure and a lower risk of injury to the caregiver."
